The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care Research Unit, established by Professor Ian Greaves is located at the Department of Academic Emergency Medicine, James Cook University Hospital, Teesside. It was under the direction of Prof Malcolm Woollard until 2006. The Faculty generously funded a full time research post from 2002-2008. The Department was responsible for a major study commissioned by the Department of Health into the tasking of Helicopter Retrieval services. In addition it has coordinated a number of smaller studies. Current funded initiatives include research into ultrasound in the pre-hospital environment and tissue donation. The Department has been chosen as one of the centres for a major study of the pre-hospital use of hypertonic saline dextran which is due to commence later in 2008.
As well as research, the Department and its staff undertake a wide range of teaching activity. They are also delighted to provide advice and assistance with projects form other researchers and are often able to assist with practical advice regarding the feasibility of study proposals. With wide national and international links, research can also be facilitated and unnecessary duplication avoided. The departmental library stocks all the major world journals on pre-hospital care and these are available for consultation on a reference basis. The Department can be contacted by e mailing the administrator Mrs Gillian Robins on gillian.robins@stees.nhs.uk or by telephone on 01542 282898.
